On going series of releases initiated with an album at Subtext Records (2024), Başak Günak has applied the concept of rewilding – an anthropological concept, typically associated with damaged, human-used or restored ecosystems (A.T sing, 2015) – to sound itself. Günak proposes a new way of listening to damaged regions and landscapes. While foraging sounds from her previous installations, Günak weaves them together with whispers, whistles, and a deconstructed South-Eastern Anatolian folk song. In the compositions, Günak treats whispers and sine waves as “auto-rewilders,” allowing them to shape the soundscape. Sometimes, these elements sink into the background, only to resurface later, much like the cycles of nature itself.

The live performance of Rewilding is creating its own ecosystem, a sonic and visual one. In its being it’s creating a gentle hum, spangled with electronics and bells, like a return to the immense Anatolian plateau, a subterranean labyrinth where murmured voices and abyssal drones intersect, forming an immense mantra.

For the live A/V, Günak collaborates with Berlin-based Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Maia, whose signature flickering analogue visuals draw viewers into mysterious, uncharted terrains. Maia blends contemporary and classical film elements, challenging traditional film practices while expanding the visual and technological legacy of analog cinema. Drawing on phytogram technique and the manipulation of raw film materials, Maia pushes the boundaries of analog media to create immersive, large-scale displays of vibrant colour fields, slow erosions with continuously shifting patterns. Rewinding becomes an artistic act – a way of sculpting time, to reveal layers that come to life and would otherwise remain unseen.  His dynamic visuals reshape the stage environment, offering an experience that redefines the materiality and expressive potential of analog and live cinema mediums.
